The Caliban Quartet of Bassoonists was founded in 1993, comprised of Toronto's top four bassoonists and dedicated to playing chamber music of the highest quality from all kinds of genres. Before playing its last concert in December, 2008, the Quartet played dozens of concerts throughout Canada including the opening of theĀ IDRSĀ convention in Banff in 2002; the quartet made three outstanding recordings on the CBC Records, BIS and ATMA labels and had over 15 new works written for them. They added over 60 new arrangements to the bassoon quartet repertoire and even created a children's show entitled "Darwood's Wild Bassoon". They collaborated over the years with such notable musicians as Bill Douglas, Mark Duggan, Patricia O'Callaghan, Guido Basso, Kate Crossan, Mary Lou Fallis, Alain Trudel and Guy Few. The founding members were Nadina Mackie, Fraser Jackson, Kathleen McLean and Michael Sweeney; later versions of the quartet included the outstanding bassoonists Christopher Millard, Mathieu Lussier and Jesse Read.
